The Wisdom of Slowing Down: Lessons From a Quiet Lake & The Healing Power of the Vagus Nerve

Aug 05, 2026

Warm greetings from beautiful Muskoka, Canada.

For the past few weeks I have had the gift of waking each morning beside one of the countless lakes that make this part of the world so magical.

There is something extraordinary about beginning the day here.

The water is often perfectly still, the mist gently rising as the sun begins to warm the earth.

Dragonflies dance effortlessly above the lilies, loons call across the lake, and before the world asks anything of me, I simply sit.

Every morning I roll out my yoga mat on the dock.

Sometimes a long practice, other mornings I simply breathe, listen and watch the water.

Nature has become my teacher once again.

As I sit here, I cannot help but notice that this peaceful landscape reflects exactly what is happening inside our own bodies when we slow down enough to truly rest.

The lake has become a mirror for the nervous system.

When the winds are strong, the surface becomes restless and choppy.

It is difficult to see beneath.

But when the winds soften…

…the water becomes clear, still and reflective.

Our minds and bodies are no different.

Peace Has Always Been Within

Over the years I have often spoken about yoga helping us to "find peace," but I have come to realise that peace is not something we have to create.

It is already there, it's inside you.

Yes, the external environment affects us, but peace actually grows from within.

We always begin with ourselves.

How can we find calm in the midst of the storm?

Peace is simply hidden beneath the waves of stress.

Modern science is now giving language to something yoga has understood for thousands of years.

It is called the nervous system.

For many, this may sound complicated – and yes it is, but I will keep it really simple.

As you continue to read this I hope it affects your rest and digest receiver.

Meet the Vagus Nerve

So here we go…

One of the nervous system's greatest messengers is the beautiful Vagus nerve.

Often also referred to as the Soul Nerve or Spiritual Nerve as it processes your gut intuition, deep compassion, heart-centered love, and a profound state of inner peace.

The Wandering Healer

The word vagus comes from the Latin word meaning wandering.

How beautiful is that?

Because it truly does wander.

It travels from the brain down through:

  • the face
  • the throat
  • the heart
  • the lungs
  • the digestive organs

...carrying messages in both directions.

It is constantly asking one simple question:

"Are we safe?"

Every moment of every day our nervous system is answering that question.

When life feels overwhelming...

When we rush from one thing to the next...

When we carry emotional burdens...

When we breathe shallowly...

Sleep poorly...

Or remain under constant pressure...

The body begins to believe that danger is everywhere.

Without us even realising it, we enter what scientists call the sympathetic nervous system.

Most of us know it simply as…

Fight or Flight.

When We Live in Survival

This response is extraordinary and has kept humanity alive for thousands of years.

If a bear were chasing us through the forest, this system would save our lives.

The body responds instinctively:

  • Our heart beats faster.
  • Our breathing becomes quicker.
  • Blood moves towards the muscles.
  • Digestion slows.
  • Healing pauses.
  • Hormones shift.
  • The immune system changes its priorities.

The body becomes brilliantly efficient at one thing…

Survival.

The challenge is that many of us are no longer running from bears.

We are running from:

  • Deadlines
  • Notifications
  • Financial worries
  • Busy calendars
  • Constant stimulation

And the body often cannot tell the difference.

When stress becomes our normal state, we begin living in survival instead of truly living.

No wonder so many people feel exhausted…

...we are doing so much.

Rest, Digest & Restore

The wonderful news is this…

Our bodies were never designed to remain in survival.

They are designed to come home again.

When the vagus nerve is gently stimulated, another part of the nervous system begins to awaken.

The parasympathetic nervous system.

Sometimes called…

Rest and Digest.

Personally, I like to think of it as...

Rest, Digest and Restore.

This is where healing begins.

As the nervous system settles:

  • The heart rate slows.
  • The breath deepens.
  • Digestion returns.
  • Inflammation reduces.
  • Hormones begin to balance.
  • The immune system becomes stronger.
  • The mind becomes clearer.
  • The body remembers how to repair itself.

Nothing has been forced.

Nothing has been fixed.

The body simply returns to what it has always known.

This Is Why Yoga Works

People often ask me,

"Why does yoga make me feel so different?"

Of course stronger muscles and greater flexibility are wonderful gifts and very important.

But I believe the deepest transformation happens somewhere we cannot see.

Every slow inhale…

Every conscious exhale…

Every mindful movement…

Every long relaxation…

Every meditation…

Every moment of stillness…

We are gently whispering to the nervous system,

"You are safe."

And when the body finally believes us…

...everything begins to change.

Yoga is not asking us to become someone else.

It is inviting us to remember who we are beneath the tension.

Yoga, the Vagus Nerve & the Science of Healing

What I find especially encouraging is that we are now seeing more doctors, psychologists and healthcare professionals recommending yoga, breathwork and meditation alongside conventional treatments for stress-related conditions.

Why?

Because research continues to demonstrate that these practices help improve what is known as vagal tone, a measure of how well the vagus nerve is functioning.

A healthy vagal tone is associated with:

  • Greater emotional resilience
  • Improved digestion
  • Healthier heart function
  • Stronger immune responses
  • An increased ability to move out of stress and back into balance

How Yoga Supports the Vagus Nerve

The beauty is that yoga gently nourishes the vagus nerve in many different ways.

Through:

  • Slow diaphragmatic breathing
  • Longer exhalations that signal safety to the brain
  • Gentle movement
  • Mindful transitions
  • Humming
  • Chanting
  • Meditation
  • Deep relaxation

...all help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, our natural "rest, digest and restore" state.

Over time, these simple yet powerful practices can help retrain a nervous system that has become accustomed to living in survival mode.

Stress, Emotions & the Nervous System

We often hear people say they are "holding stress" or "holding emotions" in the body, and in many ways this is true.

Chronic fear, grief, anxiety, overwhelm and unresolved emotional experiences can keep the nervous system on high alert for months or even years.

While emotions are not stored in the vagus nerve itself, the vagus nerve plays a profound role in how we experience and regulate those emotions.

When vagal tone is low, it can become harder to feel calm, connected and emotionally resilient.

As we gently strengthen the vagus nerve through yoga and conscious breathing, we often notice something remarkable...

We feel safer in our own bodies.

We respond rather than react.

We recover from life's challenges more easily.

It is not that yoga erases our difficulties; rather, it gives our nervous system the capacity to meet them with greater steadiness, compassion and ease.

Remembering What the Body Already Knows

This, to me, is one of yoga's greatest gifts.

It reminds the body of something it has never truly forgotten

...that beneath the stress...

...beneath the fear...

...beneath the constant doing...

...there is an innate intelligence always working towards healing.

Every slow breath...

Every mindful movement...

Every moment of stillness...

...is an invitation to awaken that wisdom once again.

Every Little Thing Matters

One of the greatest lessons this summer has offered me is that healing is rarely one dramatic event.

It is hundreds of tiny moments.

Like...

  • A slower breath.
  • Choosing to step outside.
  • Walking barefoot on the earth.
  • Watching the sunrise.
  • Turning off the phone.
  • Sharing a heartfelt conversation.
  • Preparing nourishing food.
  • Practising yoga for twenty minutes instead of none.
  • Closing the eyes for five quiet breaths.
  • Meditating.
  • Listening instead of rushing.

One beautiful choice may seem insignificant.

But small moments repeated consistently become the rhythm of a life.

This is yoga.

Not only what happens on the mat.

Nature Understands Regulation

As I watch the water each morning, I realise nature never rushes herself.

The trees do not compete.

The lake never apologises for being still.

The dragonfly lands when it is time to rest.

Everything belongs to a rhythm.

Perhaps we have simply forgotten ours.

Yoga gently helps us remember.

Every conscious breath is an invitation back home.

Every practice becomes a conversation with the nervous system.

Every moment of awareness strengthens our ability to move away from survival and towards presence.

Not overnight.

Not perfectly.

But lovingly.

One breath at a time.

An Invitation

If life has felt overwhelming recently…

If your mind has been busy…

If your body feels tired even after sleeping…

Perhaps you do not need to do more.

Perhaps you simply need more moments where your nervous system feels safe.

Inside our Living Yoga Community you can explore practices designed specifically to nourish the vagus nerve and regulate the nervous system.

Through:

  • Conscious breathing
  • Gentle movement
  • Restorative yoga
  • Meditation
  • Deep relaxation

...we create the conditions for healing to unfold naturally.

You do not have to force calm.

You simply create the space where calm can find you again.

From a quiet dock in Muskoka, surrounded by still water, birdsong and endless gratitude, I am reminded that the greatest healing often arrives in the gentlest ways.

May you offer yourself those moments too.

With love,

Wenche 🤍

"Healing rarely arrives as a single breakthrough. It comes quietly, carried on the next conscious breath, the next gentle choice, and the quiet remembering that beneath every wave, the lake has always been still."
